MEXILOGFEST W/ MATT VASQUEZ

What boards did you bring/ride? How did they go?

I brought a 9’6 custom that I designed with Brent for this competition. It’s a very progressive design with touches of classic longboard templates. Brent and I worked on 3 other boards before getting to a finalized model which was a 4 month process! In the end, the board did exactly what we designed it for & was very versatile in all conditions of the competition!

What place did you place year?

This year I was able to climb the ladder & ended up with a semi-final finish which would rank me anywhere between 5th and 7th place!

How many years have you been?

This has been my 3rd year attending the Mexilogfest.

How do the waves compare to Ala Moana Bowls?

The wave is equally similar and different to bowls. Surfing bowls is definitely faster and tends not to need a fade to nose-ride. Los Pinos on the other hand has very dumpy sections and also a flat section. The trickiest part about surfing there is that you never really knew if the wave was about to slow down or speed up. No matter what wave you caught, you always had to play it by ear as you surfed!

What did you eat? Drink? How many cervezas did you smash? What was your favorite?

Hahaha, i’m not one to drink so it was all non-alcoholic for me again this year! I definitely had one too many bottled cokes and a TON of water!! We hit a bunch of awesome cafes during our trip & also ate a BUNCH of tacos! Our favorite spot was definitely Minchopi (check out their instagram). We became friends with the aunties that worked there & they would always ask how I was doing in the competition!

Who was your crew down there?

I was 100% of the time with my beautiful girlfriend Alejandra & my photographer buddy Daniel. Daniel & I will be releasing a Midfins film about our mexico trip soon! Stay tuned 👀

What do you hope for next year?

I’m definitely hoping to be in the final next year haha but more than that i’m hoping to meet new friends, find more inspiration, & hopefully inspire others!

What's next? More travel? Local comps?

Whew! That’s a great question. I’m actually going to be in 2 local competitions coming up! I got the Local Motion Surf into Summer & the WSL QS Surf into Summer from the 7th-10th of June, so very soon!

Anything else you want to add/say?

HUGE mahalos to Brent for working with me on all the board projects before I left! This is a win for US! I can gladly say that we executed our board design perfectly & I can’t wait to create more together. Also, mahalos to those that watched me all event it doesn’t go unnoticed! B.Clem Surfboards for the win!!!
